The Game's Dodge Roll Warrants to Be Celebrated
Having spent time with Elden Ring, or most other 3D action game, chances are you're acquainted with the fantastic technique called the “evasion roll.” This avoidance maneuver enables your hero to perform a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to avoid all incoming damage and create distance from opponents. Seems useful, right?
The evasion roll, though, has attracted significant backlash, and not only because of the rolling; it's been labeled dumb, a cheap tactic, and an unbelievable technique — and in some cases, I see the point. Picture me rolling around hostile mobs in The Witcher 3 — they can't hit me! But the title's dodge roll stands as the roll to top all dodge rolls evasion moves, and let me explain.
Regarding this title, the developers found a great way to respond to all views suggesting the technique is too easy: merely bestow every enemy unreasonable strength, triple that, and each player character who dares come near them will feel immensely thankful thanks to their rolling skill, myself included. When the stakes are this high, successfully rolling to victory comes across as a triumph, rather than a cheap trick.
No other evasion method in Elden Ring comes close to this level of gratification and reliability, as quick dashes offer limited distance and guard stances get quickly shattered by tough opponents. A person once suggested jumping as a go-to Elden Ring dodging technique, but in addition to lacking perfect repositioning, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit could enhance my odds of defeating bosses (lack of skill, maybe).
Learning the Move
Although the rolling dodge provides relief in an incredibly challenging experience, it demands ability. Firstly, this title's rolling dodge merely initiates a frame of protection once you let go of the dodge button, which stops a quick, panicky escape from dangerous scenarios. Additionally, while it might transport you away from enemies, it's far more effective to utilize it as a moment to move nearer, ideally to their rear, and land some hits. In conclusion, you must still understand and anticipate opponent moves, since evading too early of a prolonged preparation might terminate your protection before the blow lands… resulting in severe damage.
A Balanced Mechanic
While dodge-rolling in fast repetition might seem rather absurd (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't truly feasible in Elden Ring. Naturally, that still doesn't make it a plausible combat move — which is precisely why it would be pure horror to see it in a game like a historical simulation — but this is a flashy fantasy title being considered, so who cares?
Comparable to any well-executed dodge roll, Elden Ring's dodge motion is improved by a little somersault-y hop at the start, providing a dynamic sensation rather than placing the avatar on the floor. According to your loadout, the technique may seem incredibly quick or relatively slow, however, it's consistently quicker and smoother than the rolling dodges used in Dark Souls. True, you will stick your big blade on the floor while equipped with it, but that's your responsibility for not just playing alternative arms (In jest — steer clear of the game with a crossbow).
The Perfect Balance
The game's evasion system creates the perfect balance between challenge and opportunity, providing prospects of success while risking the loss of that hope at the tiniest misstep. Learn this skill, and you'll gain not just victory, but gratification.
