Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
